Equipment:  cones if no lines in playing area for boundaries.

Can utilize frisbees, hoops, poly spots or can pretend to hold imaginary steering wheel

  • Explain to the kids that if you say Red or blow your whistle 2 x, it means stop.  If they continue to on red light that you will have them move back 3 steps, if they get caught again, they will need to move back to the starting position
  • Explain if you say go or blow your whistle 1x, that means go.  They can continue moving towards the designated end point
  • Have kids move across the room ideally following the red light/green light signals until they reach the opposite end.
  • Can try to trick the kids by saying red, when they are expecting green to see who is listening.  Best to do this if they are at the starting point, where they can easily return to the start point.
    • Can have kids make car sounds while driving, have them “honk” their horns,
    • Can have just boy cars go, girl cars go.
    • Utilize the color or hoops/frisbees by calling various colors
    • Can call if wearing a certain color etc.
  • Variation, adding various commands in addition to Red & Green.
  • Can introduce a few of these and continue to add more variations throughout the game or the next time you play.
    • Green still remains moving forward and Red remains stop.
    • Yellow – Run in place
    • Roundabout – turn round once
    • Motorway – sprint (leave until a bit later in the warm-up)
    • Speed Bump – jump and carry on.
    • Carpool – travel in groups of 2 or more
    • Low bridge – everyone walks around hunched over / low to the ground
    • Traffic Jam – walk or slowly jog
    • Change Lanes – change direction
    • Reverse – walk backwards
    • Breakdown – lie down until rescued
    • Rain – use arms to mimic windscreen wipers
    • Police Car – Sit on floor and spin round shouting “making siren sound”

Crazy Cones - Jr(with parent) , Kido, Sport

Equipment:  20+ cones, if under 22 kids, if more kids, need more cones

  • Divide the group into 2 teams ( boys vs girls, colored uniform shirt, colors vs patterns) try to choose something that will help identify which child is on what team.
  • Place a large amount of cones standing up around the area between the 2 teams.  Demonstrate that 1 team will be knocking ANY standing cones and that is their only, to continue to knock over cones I until I say wait.
  • The opposite team will be picking up the cones and turning them right side up.
  • On the coaches cue, 1 team is knocking them over ( with HANDS ONLY) and the other team is picking them up.
  • The coach says “freeze” and kids return their teams & are NOT to touch any cones while both teams are “frozen”.
  • Coach will then count the # of cones standing and/or lying down, once they have that # can reset the cones.
  • Once the count from the 1st round is complete, teams will switch jobs.  Those that were “tipping” previously will now pick them up and those previously picking them up will now have a turn to “tip” the cones.
  • Play the last round and determine which team was able to knock the most cones over during their designated time.

Everybody Is It- Kido, Sport

Equipment:  Scarves (1 scarf/child) cones if no lines are available in the playing area.

  • Just as the name says, it is a Tag game but instead of only 1 or 2 students being it, EVERYONE is it.  All Students are given a scarf to tuck into their pocket or waistband if no pockets.
  • Coach will explain where the boundaries are that students should stay within.
  • Recommend bringing a few students to help demonstrate.  Remind them they can NOT hold the scarf in their pocket if someone tries to grab it.  They must have scarf hanging out that can be readily grabbed.
  • 1s round – on coach’s whistle students move throughout the play area trying to avoid getting their scarf pulled and trying to pull the scarf of the other students.
    • If their scarf is pulled, they must say “ I love Kidokinetics/ I love PE” to get their scarf back from the student  who pulled their scarf.
  • 2nd round:  This round the students do NOT give back a scarf that they take from others and keep it in their hand.  If they take a scarf from another student, they keep that scarf in their hands & do NOT put in back in their pocket.   The object is to collect the most scarves.
    • If a student’s scarf is taken, they can still continue to play.
    • Once all the scarves have been taken, the person that has the most scarves is the winner
    • There is also a 2nd winner, they student that was the last one to get their scarf stolen is also a winner.

Sharks & Minnows- Kido, Sport

Equipment:  cones if no lines are available in the playing area.

  • 1 student, possibly 2 if large group will be chosen to be the shark and will stand in the middle of the play area.  Be sure to explain the boundaries of the area to all the students
  • The rest of the students will be the “minnows” and will stand at 1 end of the playing area and will attempt to swim across the ocean/play area attempting to get across without being tagged by the shark.  Have a designated point they need to reach on the opposite side of the play area.
  • If a student gets tagged by the shark, that student also becomes a shark and helps to tag more minnows.  The game continues until all the minnows are tagged.
    • A variation, if the minnow gets tagged, they sit down in the spot they get tagged and become an octopus.  They reach their arms out to the side, but can NOT move from the area they were tagged and must remain sitting.
    • They can help the shark by tagging minnows that try to run by them.  If they tag a minnow, that minnow sits down where they got tagged and help tag more minnows.

  • When coach signals, the “Chickens” shout loudly  “What time is it Mr/Mrs Fox?”.
  • The Fox replies with a number between 1- 11 o’clock.  If the Fox says “midnight” the Fox will turn around and chase the chickens back to the starting point and try to tag as many chickens as they can.
    • Remind  Fox to mix up the time/number of steps the chickens need to take.  As the chickens get closer, they will not be able to say lower numbers.
    • The Fox wants to get the chickens close so they can catch them when they say “midnight”
    • Coach might need to be near the Fox and shout out the time loudly so the chickens can hear.
  • For the chickens, depending on what number The Fox says, the chickens take that many steps toward The Fox.
    • Make sure the students take little steps.
    • Coach may want to take the steps with the chickens and keep the kids even with the coach.
    • Remind students they are trying to sneak up on the Fox.
    • If The Fox says “ midnight” they turn and run back to the starting point trying to avoid being tagged by the The Fox.
  • Once the Fox says midnight and tags some chickens, the coach will chose a new Fox.
    • It is better to randomly choose the next Fox, if you choose the children that get tagged, they will not hustle back to the start but will try to get tagged.
    • 2 Foxes can be it at the same time and they alternate saying a time.

  • The Robot Master points robot #1 in 1 direction and gives them a slight nudge to start walking.  The Robot Master will then point robot #2 in the opposite direction and give them a slight nudge to start walking.
  • Both robot #1 and #2 will continue to walk (slowly) in the direction they were pointed until they reach the out of bounds line or a fence, pole, etc.  If they reach a stopping point they will start making a “beeping sound” until their Robot Master comes to turn them in a  different direction.
  • The Robot Master needs to continue to run back and forth between the 2 robots and change their direction so they don’t run into the out of bounds line and start beeping.
  • After a designated amount of time, the coach blows whistle, students regroup & choose a new Robot Master and resume game.  Rotate again so all students have a turn to be the Robot Master.

  • Whichever student does not get a poly spot moves to the middle and says “3-2-1 Switch”.
  • If the groups are larger than 5, then some students can wait on the side to rotate into the game.  The student who does not get a poly spot, then rotates out of the game briefly and the student who was 1st in line on the side rotates into the middle position.

  • Coach will begin with some commands and both partners must follow along.  Coach will say – touch your shoulders, touch your head, touch your knees, etc.  After naming different body parts the coach will then say “ cone/scarf/bean bag”, when coach says the item, the students must try to grab the item between them before their partner can “grab it”
  • The students can keep track of how many times they grab the item.
  • If the student grabs the item when the coach did NOT say, they will lose 1 of their points.
  • After a few rounds, coach can have the students rotate to get a new partner.  What works well if 1 of the rows of partners takes 1 step to their left and moves to the next person.  The student that was on the end, moves to the opposite end so everyone has a new partner.

  • On the coaches signal, the students with the ice cream will move around the designated area balancing their ice cream on their cones and trying to avoid those that are “it”
  • The “its’ will be trying to knock the ice cream off of the cones.  If “it” knocks a student’s ice cream, that student gives the “it” their cone, the original “it”  become the “new it” and the old it retrieves the ball and places it on the top of the upside down cone.

Rock/Paper/ Scissor Variations - older Kido, sport

Rock/Paper/Scissors – Hoops

Equipment  approximately 10-12 hoops or poly spots/group, depending on class size.

  • Divide students into 2 groups of equal number of students. If more than 15 kids it is recommended to divide the group into 4 groups and set up another 10-12 spots/hoops.
  • Place a line of hula hoops or poly spots in a single line ( approximately 10-12 hoops/spots minimum) for each set of 2 groups.
  • Half the group will be at 1 end of the hoops/spots and the other half at the opposite end of the hoops/spots.
  • Review with students how to do Rock/Paper/Scissors – what the hand signals look like, that they must show on 3 and what hand signal beats the others.  Once students understand that, the game can begin.
  • Coach will whistle and 1 student from each end of the line of spots/hoops will start hopping toward the other team.  Whenever the 2 opposing students meet, they stop in their spots and do the Rock/Paper/Scissors challenge.
  • If they win, the student they beat will move out of the way & they continue to hop towards the opposite end.  Once a student loses, the next person in line starts to hope toward the opposite side to meet the opposing player.
  • Once next set of students meet, they do the challenge and whoever wins continues to hop toward the other side.  If 1 of the team can make it all the way across to the opposing sides starting hoop/spot, they get a point.
  • Variation:  if a group larger than 15, may want to set up a 2nd row of spots/hoops and divide the group into 4 teams to avoid having students wait too long for their turn.

Rock/Paper/Scissors – Victory Lap

Equipment: cones to create a center area.

  • Students will all begin in the center area, size will vary depending on class size and space available.
  • Review with students how to do Rock/Paper/Scissors – what the hand signals look like, that they must show on 3 and what hand signal beats the others.  Once students understand that, the game can begin.
  • Coach will signal for the game to begin, they must find a partner within the center area to challenge.  Once they challenge the other student, whomever wins, runs a victory lap, on the outside area of the center area where challenges are taking place
  • The partner that loses, will quickly look to find a new student to challenge within the center area.  If they win, they run a victory lap around the perimeter of the center area.  If they lose, they look for another student within the center area to challenge.
  • If a student wins, they run their victory lap and then return to the center area to challenge other students.  If they win, they run another victory lap, if they lose, they find a new student to challenge.
  • Have students keep track of how many victory laps they make.

Rock/Paper/Scissors – Team Challenge

Equipment: None needed

  • .Review with students how to do Rock/Paper/Scissors – what the hand signals look like, that they must show on 3 and what hand signal beats the others.  Once students understand that, the game can begin.
  •  All students start in the middle and on the coach’s command turn to the nearest person to challenge them to Rock/Paper/Scissors.
  • If they lose, they get behind the person they lost to and put their hands on that person’s shoulders.  They are now in a train of 2 students.
  • That train then finds either an individual or another train of students to challenge.  Whichever group loses, they go to the back of the train and make a longer train by holding on the shoulder of the person in front of you.
  • The various trains continue to challenge each other until the last 2 trains remain for the final challenge.

Rock/Paper/Scissors – Baseball

Equipment: ( 4) bases or poly spots and place in a baseball diamond format.

  • .Review with students how to do Rock/Paper/Scissors – what the hand signals look like, that they must show on 3 and what hand signal beats the others.  Once students understand that, the game can begin.
  • All students start at home base, they challenge another student.  If they win, they move to 1st base and challenge another student at 1st base.  If they win, they can move to 2nd base and continue to move around the bases.  Students must win a challenge at each base to advance.
  • If student does not win the challenge, they turn to another student at the base they are located at and challenge them to hopefully advance to the next base.
  • Students continue to challenge each other at the various bases trying to move around all of the bases and can count the number of “runs” they get each time they pass home base.

Rock/Paper/Scissors – Body Motions

Equipment:  None

  • In this game, students use their bodies to make rock, paper & scissors vs hand motions.
    •  Rock: Kneel down and hug your knees.
    •  Paper: Stand up tall and make an “X” with your body; just like a jumping jack.
    • Scissors: one foot forward, one foot back as you would if you were doing a scissor jump.
  • Have students practice the different body motions so they understand are used of the movements
  • Now have students find a partner to challenge, switch to a new partner after each challenge.

Protect the Castle- Kido, Sport

Equipment:  8- 12 same size hula hoops ( to build a hula hut), 4- 6 playground or gator balls, long rope/ poly spots or cones for center line

  • Divide students into 2 groups of equal number of students. Create a centerline (use line on gym floor, if available) otherwise long rope/cones or poly spots to separate the 2 sides.
  • Build a hula hut at the back part of the play area on each side ( 4- 6 hoops are needed/ hut).  Ensure huts are equal distance from the center line for each side.
  • Each team can have 1 castle guard to “protect the castle” . All other students are throwing balls or trying to block the balls from the opposing side.
  • Each side will be given an equal number of balls to start, approximately 2-3 balls/side.
  • Instruct students to throw/roll the balls to try to knock the opposite side’s hula hut/castle down.  Remind students they are aiming for the castle and not trying to throw at the students.
  • Object is to try to knock down the other side’s castle by hitting it with a ball
  • Variation:
    • If the opposite side catches a ball in mid air, the person that threw the ball must move to the side lines and do 10 jumping jacks before they return to the game.

Rolling Dodgeball - Kido, Sport

Equipment:  16-20 cones, 4- 6 playground or gator balls, long rope, poly spots or cones to mark a centerline if lines are NOT available on the gym floor.

  • Divide students into 2 groups of equal number of students. Create a centerline (use line on gym floor, if available) otherwise long rope/cones or poly spots to separate the 2 sides.
  • Place a row of cones in a line along the back line of the dodgeball court, approximately  8-10 cones/side.  Ensure cones are equal distance from the center line for each side.
  • Each team will be trying to protect their cones from getting tipped over but at the same time trying to roll/throw balls to tip the opposing groups’ cones.
  • Each side will be given an equal number of balls to start, approximately 2-3 balls/side.
  • Instruct students to roll the balls to try to knock the opposite side’s cones along the back line.   Remind students they are aiming for the cones and not trying to throw at the students.
  • Object is to try to knock down the other side’s cones and see which side can know the most. l
  • Variation:
    • If the opposite side catches a ball in mid air, the person that threw the ball must move to the side lines and do 10 jumping jacks before they return to the game.

Capture the Flag - Sport

Equipment:  2 scarves, cones for boundaries & the mark off a jail area, rope or poly spots for center line if lines on gym floor are not available.

  • Divide students into 2 groups of equal number of students. Create a centerline (use line on gym floor, if available) otherwise long rope/cones or poly spots to separate the 2 sides.
  • Place a scarf in the back of the playing area on each team, equal distance from the center line.
  • Set up a Jail area toward the back of the playing area on both sides, designated by cones
  • Object is to cross onto the other side to try to steal their flag/scarf and bring it back to your side.
  • Explain to the students that when they cross the centerline and move onto the other team’s side, they can get tagged and go to “jail”.  If they go to jail, they must remain in jail until someone from their team runs to jail to “ free” them. They must return to their side with the person that came to free them from jail.
  • Each team is attempting to cross onto the other side to steal the opposite team’s scarf/flag.
  • If 1 of the teams grabs the scarf/flag and makes it back to their side they win. If they get tagged part way back to their side, the person who stole the flag goes to jail.  The flag gets dropped wherever the person got tagged, which is hopefully closer to the center line than before.
  • Game continues until the flag can be stolen and brought back to the opposite side or all of 1 team is in jail.

Star Wars Game - Kido, Sport

Equipment Needed: bag of balls (size dependent on ages: can use bouncy balls for younger kids/ tennis balls for older kids), 1 cone and  poly spot/child

Create a large circle with poly spots. Place a cone on each spot. This will be each child’s “spaceship”! There should be one spaceship per student (Spaceship = 1 poly spot with 1 cone on top)

  •  Place a pile of balls/meteors in the middle of the large circle.
  •  The object of the game is for the students to “blow up” each other’s spaceship by rolling a ball into the cones to knock them down.
  •  Students may defend their spaceships by standing around them and using their hands and feet to push the balls or “meteors” away.
  • Students can leave their spaceship to find balls/meteors but must come back if they’d like to throw them.
    • Students  are only allowed to throw/roll the balls from their own spaceship dock.
    • Students are not allowed to knock down the spaceships that are right next to you
  •  If a spaceship gets “blown up”, students must do 5-10 jumping jacks (or an exercise of your choice) to rebuild their ship. Once exercise is completed, students can rebuild their spaceship by standing the cone back up on their poly spot.

Variations:

  •  Can have kids ONLY kick the ball vs roll

Crazy Cones

  • Divide the group into 2 teams (boys vs girls, colored uniform shirt, colors vs patterns) try to choose something that will help identify which child is on what team.
  • Place a large amount of cones standing up around the area between the 2 teams.  Demonstrate that 1 team will be knocking ANY standing cones and that is their only, to continue to knock over cones I until I say wait.
  • The opposite team will be picking up the cones and turning them right side up.
  • On the coaches cue, 1 team is knocking them over (with HANDS ONLY) and the other team is picking them up.

Roll the Dice

  • Utilize the rubber dice and allow the kids to roll the dice and have kids count out the # on the dice
  • Give them different exercises to to do based on the # rolled.
  • Try to allow all the children to roll and/or choose an exercise.
  • Can also break group in 2, and each team rolls the dice, whichever team has the higher # does NOT have to run a lap. If  your team has the lower # must run 1 lap (or do 3- 5 jumping jacks) and then try again.
